Kees Lokman’s research examines the implications of large-scale infrastructures on the physical form and functioning of the built environment. In the face of climate change, environmental degradation, ongoing urban development and geopolitical conflict, the planning and design of infrastructure is key in addressing notions of risk, adaptation and sustainability. As such, recent and ongoing research primarily focuses on two aspects. First, using methods of landscape visualization to reveal the relationships among infrastructural networks, material resource flows (water, waste and energy), socio-political issues and environmental transformations. Second, to use this spatial knowledge to envision new possibilities for future landscape and infrastructure adaptations, transformations and configurations. Taken together, this work not only communicates how landscapes have changed and may change in the future, it also enables the transmission of visually accessible knowledge among interdisciplinary groups and diverse stakeholders. Ultimately, this research aims to foreground how design and design thinking can help planners, public agencies and decision-makers to better understand and envision more sustainable (urban) environments.
