CALP members and Oak Bay staff presenting in 2nd World Forum on Urban Forests in Washington, D.C.

Urban forests and green spaces stand as vital elements within the framework of sustainable and adaptable urban advancement, offering a diverse array of ecological benefits and utilities. Their significant role in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals, notably SDG11, dedicated to the establishment of secure, adaptable, and sustainable cities, cannot be overlooked.

The 2nd World Forum on Urban Forests took place in Washington DC from 16 to 20 October 2023. Its overall theme was Greener, Healthier and Happier Cities for All, which was specifically selected to underscore the importance of constructing all-embracing and easily accessible cities where the benefits and amenities of urban forests and trees are universally accessible.

The primary objective of the Forum is to persistently highlight positive instances of planning, design, and management techniques that various cities, characterized by diverse cultures, structures, and historical backgrounds, have adopted to maximize the contributions of urban woodlands and green infrastructure. These contributions encompass aspects such as fostering economic development, conserving the environment, bolstering resilience, enhancing social unity, and increasing public participation.

A team of CALP members attended this forum and delivered a well-received talk entitled: Beyond education and engagement: How the Oak Bay Coolkit Program empowers Climate Champions in greening private and public land.
