Sara received her Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Geography from Simon Fraser University and her Masters of Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia, earning the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects Award of Merit for her studies. She was also fortunate to receive the Masuno travel award and take a semester to travel to Japan and study the country’s gardens and landscapes. During her studies at UBC, and following graduation, she worked for the Design Centre for Sustainability at UBC (DCS). She has over 5 years of professional experience working with a diverse range of communities at regional, city, and neighbourhood scales.Sara joined CALP as a Research Scientist, where she now works to advance the use of visioning tools in climate change planning and community energy systems. She also volunteers with Community Studio, a collaborative non-profit group dedicated to supporting and initiating grassroots projects that restore, revive and rejuvenate our neighbourhoods. She will be starting her PhD May 2013 at UBC. The title of her proposed research for her PhD is Future Suburban Forests in a Changing Climate: Balancing Sustainability and Social Acceptance. Recently, Sara was awarded the prestigious Future Forests Fellowship. Sara’s practical aim for the Future Forests project is to produce and implementable scientifically-grounded Suburban Forest Design Guidelines for climate change response at the neighbourhood scale.
